April Fools Day: blog header

With Father’s Day quickly approaching, many people will be looking for a gift to showcase their appreciation for their dads. Those homemade coupon books for “one free hug” may have been adorable when you were a child, but it’s time to change it up this year. Give the crowds of Father’s Day present shoppers a helping hand by starting a new Print on Demand (POD) campaign dedicated to this special day. If you are struggling with how you should launch this new product line, check out some of our tips below for creating Father’s Day design ideas.

What is Father’s Day?

The history

On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored an event explicitly in honor of fathers, in memory of the 362 men who had died in the December explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines. However, this was originally meant to be a one-time commemoration. The following year, Sonora Smart Dodd attempted to create an official equivalent to Mother’s Day for male parents. After reaching out to local businesses, churches and government officials for support of her idea, she came out successful and Father’s Day was created!

Why should you create a POD Father’s Day campaign?

According to a 2020 survey conducted by the National Retail Federation, total spending for Father’s Day could reach $17.0 billion—an all-time high! There is a huge market of people purchasing items for Father’s Day, making it the perfect opportunity for POD sellers to make some easy sales. As one of the biggest spending holidays in the US, take advantage of this opportunity to scale your business and test out new niches.

Father’s Day is celebrated all throughout the year which means you can scale your Father’s Day POD campaigns to different parts of the world depending on the time of year. Countries like Italy, Spain and Portugal celebrate it on March 19, while many other countries like the US, UK, Ireland and Canada celebrate it on the third Sunday in June. Check online to see all official dates for varying countries.

Add Father’s Day design ideas to your current lines

Use what you have. If you already have a few POD lines running, take those designs and alter them a bit to create a whole new line! Incorporate a few Father’s Day ideas for the big day. There’s no need to start a new line if you already have an established audience that is familiar with your work. Retargeting your current customers with a seasonal line is a great way to increase sales. Since these customers have already purchased from you in the past, there’s a greater chance that they may purchase from you again since they are already fans of your previous work.

Choosing your inventory

There are a lot of products that can be added to your Father’s Day campaign or store. General clothing attire is a fun, topical choice, but we encourage you to stick to the practical accessories that can be used all year round. Mugs are the go-to gift items for family appreciation days. In fact, they are some of the best-selling items in Print on Demand. The iconic “World’s Greatest Dad” mug is something that can be found in a ton of American households.

But if you want to fill out your product line with more options for your customers, everyday clothing is a good option. Graphic T-shirts are a common item that dads love showing off. As for other practical items, fleece blankets also act as a functional and practical year-round gift. Our face covers also make a great add-on item—especially with the pandemic still going on. For the artsy fathers, thoughtful home art such as canvas prints, cushions and posters also make a nice gift that can brighten up one’s home. Canvases are also a higher-value item which leads to more profit for you!

Father’s Day design ideas

There are a ton of lovely images that you can use for your Father’s Day designs. But if you need some help coming up with new products, consider these Father’s Day design ideas:

  • Father and children bonding – since people come in all shapes and sizes, be sure to keep it diverse. You want to offer products available for everyone!
  • Stereotypically masculine items – being the “man of the house” is usually associated with acts like killing spiders, unscrewing the jam jar and fixing the sink. Although it’s 2021 and gender norms are becoming less of a thing, there are a lot of people that like to be reminded of their manliness so feel free to capitalize on that.
  • Niche fathers – single fathers, teen fathers, army dads, and more. Hone in on a specific type of father to stand out from the competitors.

Adding custom text

Do not forget to include the custom text feature! There are a ton of Father’s Day designs out there like, “#1 Dad” or “World’s Greatest Father,” but everyone knows that those are generic designs that are worn and purchased by a large percentage of people.

Give your customers the option to draft up their own phrases that allows them to include their mother’s name. A bit of a personalized touch can help increase store sales. Check out the video below for a step-by-step tutorial on how to add the custom text feature to your store.
