Some background

A vegan is someone who does not eat any food derived from animals or animal products. They do not eat any kind of meat, fish or seafood nor consume anything made from dairy, eggs or animal fat. The vegan diet consists only of vegetables, grains, nuts and fruits, and foods that are made from plants.

As with most identities, there are different levels of veganism. An Ethical Vegan is someone who not only follows a vegan diet but extends the philosophy into lifestyle and avoids the use of animals for any purpose at all. They will not use any product that is derived from animal exploitation, for instance, leather, wool or tallow. An Environmental Vegan avoids animal products because of the unsustainable effect that large-scale farming has on the environment. There are many other types of veganism including Raw Veganism and Fruitarianism.

It’s estimated that there are about 75,300,000 vegans in the world today.  Since the 2010s, the vegan diet has become increasingly popular, making it one of the best Print on Demand niches. As of 2018, the global vegan food market was valued at $12.69 billion. In 2019, The Economist declared it “the year of the vegan“.

Design inspiration

As always, see what twists you can give to classic Print on Demand designs and advertise them in regions where veganism is on the rise. There are also some interesting crossover groups to bear in mind when coming up with new designs. Did you know that veganism was championed by the punk movement in the 1980s or that it is championed by many influential hip-hop artists and groups?

A word of caution: be careful when choosing designs and slogans. Some strict vegans do not consider avocados nor honey to be vegan. For inspiration, check out this list of common vegan and related terms:
